How Much Does a 5kVA Solar System Cost in Nigeria? (2026)
Published prices for a 5kVA solar system in Nigeria run from ₦1.6 million to ₦8 million — a fivefold spread for the same headline number. Here is why, what the credible range actually is, and the one question that separates an honest quote from a bad one.
Search this question and you will get a confident number from every result, and no two will agree. We collected eight of them. The lowest quoted a complete 5kVA installation at ₦1.63 million. The highest quoted ₦8 million. Same three words: five, k, V, A.
That fivefold spread is not eight people lying. It is one specification doing no work at all.
The short answer
- Credible all-in prices for a 5kVA residential solar system in Nigeria sit between ₦2.5 million and ₦5.5 million as of August 2026, with outliers in both directions that are real systems, not scams.
- The number that decides the price is not the kVA. It is the kWh of battery. Storage is usually more than half the bill.
- A budget 5kVA package may carry around 2.4 kWh of usable storage. A premium one carries 8.5 kWh. Both are honestly described as 5kVA.
- 10kVA systems span roughly ₦5 million to ₦13 million on the same logic.
- One more thing worth knowing: an air conditioner's "HP" describes its cooling, not its electricity use. A 1HP unit pulls around 1,000W at the wall, not 746W — and getting that wrong is how people end up with an inverter too small for the house.
- No Nigerian public body publishes a solar price index, so every figure here — ours included — traces to somebody who sells solar.
What "5kVA" actually describes
It describes the inverter, and only the inverter.
A solar system is three separate purchases wearing one name:
- Panels, measured in kWp (kilowatts peak). These decide how much energy you can generate in a day.
- Battery, measured in kWh (kilowatt-hours). This decides how long you can run without sun.
- Inverter, measured in kVA. This decides how much you can run at the same time.
Only the third one is the "5kVA". It tells you that you can run about 4 kW of appliances simultaneously — enough for a 1.5HP air conditioner plus a fridge, a freezer, lights, fans and a pressing iron. It says absolutely nothing about whether that will last twenty minutes after sunset or all night.
This is why the same phrase covers a ₦1.6 million system and an ₦8 million one, and why the honest way to price solar is by component.
The component build-up
Here is what each part actually costs in Nigeria as of August 2026.

Panel prices work out consistently across vendors: a 400W panel at ₦90,000–₦115,000, a 550W at ₦115,000–₦165,000, a 600W at ₦140,000–₦185,000. One itemised real installation quote from June 2026 came to ₦264 per watt, right in the middle.
The installation line deserves a note. Most vendors quote it as a percentage of hardware, usually 10–15%. But real itemised quotes show 9.7% on expensive builds and 17.1% on cheap ones, because a day of labour costs the same whether the panels on the roof are worth ₦300,000 or ₦3 million. A flat percentage underprices small installations, which is why we model a fixed floor plus a percentage.
Two real 5kVA systems, priced
The modest one. A household running a 1.5HP AC, fridge, freezer, ten LED bulbs, a 55" TV, three fans, an iron, a water pump, a router and a laptop uses about 17.7 kWh a day. Everything switched on at once comes to 4.1 kW; allowing that roughly 70% of it runs at the same time gives a working peak of 2.9 kW, which after power factor and headroom calls for a 5kVA inverter. Size the battery for about half a day of backup, comparable to the better packaged deals:

The same inverter, backing up the whole house. Same household, same 5kVA inverter, but now the battery has to carry the entire day's usage overnight:

₦2.9 million of difference. Identical inverter. Identical panels. Both are "a 5kVA solar system."
This is the whole explanation for the price spread, and it is also the single biggest lever you control. Sizing the battery for essentials rather than for the entire house is usually the difference between a quote you can afford and one you cannot.
The battery decision that changes the total
Tubular batteries are priced around ₦110,000 per kWh against lithium's ₦220,000, so a tubular quote will always look cheaper. Two things undo that.
You can only use half of a tubular battery. Safe depth of discharge is about 50% for tubular against 80% for lithium. So for the same usable backup you need substantially more of it — which brings the real price per usable kWh to about ₦220,000 for tubular against ₦275,000 for lithium. Most of the apparent gap closes right there.
Then you buy it again. Twice. Nigerian vendors quote tubular life at three to five years and lithium at eight to twelve. Over a ten-year horizon that is two extra battery purchases against none.
For the modest system above, tubular comes in at ₦4,753,500 against lithium's ₦5,116,500 — ₦363,000 cheaper on day one. But it needs 21 kWh on the label to give you the same usable backup that 12 kWh of lithium gives, and you buy it three times over ten years. Total spent on batteries: ₦6,930,000 tubular against ₦2,640,000 lithium. What we could not verify
We would rather be straight about this than project false confidence.
There is no neutral source for solar prices in Nigeria. The NBS, NERC and the Rural Electrification Agency publish nothing on residential solar pricing. Every figure in this article traces to an organisation with a commercial interest in the answer.
The 2026 "solar price guide" blogs that dominate search results are SEO and affiliate content with no stated methodology. Five of them agreeing is not five confirmations — it is one weak class of evidence repeated. We treated them as range checks only.
What we anchored on instead were two itemised real quotes: a full component-level breakdown of a 6kVA installation published in June 2026, and a solar company's published package pricing with the kWh of storage stated for each tier. Those are the strongest evidence available, and they are still both from sellers.
So: treat every number here as a range with a date on it, not a price. It is stamped August 2026 and it will drift.
One question to ask every installer
If you take nothing else from this:
"How many kilowatt-hours of battery storage is in this price, and what depth of discharge does the warranty allow?"
An installer who answers that immediately and in writing is quoting you a real system. One who talks only in kVA is either not thinking about it or hoping you are not.
Two more worth adding:
- What daily generation are you assuming? If it implies better than about 78% system efficiency in the south or 74% in the north, it is optimistic. - What happens in year four? If the answer involves a new battery, that belongs in the price you are comparing.
